UCO Blanks Southwestern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team earned its second shutout in as many games to open the 2018 season after a 2-0 blanking of No. 17 Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

"That was a big win for us," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "This team is playing with a really good mental toughness coming out of the gate and that's big for us. They're capable of some big things and they just need to continue to give this effort."

The Bronchos wasted no time getting going on Sunday. In a flash, Asha Haile gave UCO a 1-0 lead. The junior scored her first goal of the season off a cross from Katie Killion. The Bronchos kicked off at 1 p.m. and at 1:01, Haile slotted in a chip shot from right in front of the net to put the Bronchos ahead.

The game slowed down a bit as compared to that first minute. The Bronchos went on to take just four shots in first half. Southwestern took seven shots in the first half, but freshman goalkeeper Kelsi Gibson made four saves and the with the help of a stingy Broncho back line, thwarted the other three out of contention.

"I was really pleased with our defense," Cook said. "And really everyone in how they played the defensive side of the ball. We worked very well together from the middle of the field to the back line and Kelsi did great in goal again. That was a great team effort to get that shutout."

In the second half, the action started a little slow, but the Bronchos brought the crowd of over 300 to their feet soon after.

UCO drew a corner kick as the clock entered the 62nd minute. Kelsie Eason got in position to take the kick as her teammates settled in near the goal. She put a clean ball in and senior forward Morgan Cherry found open space and headed in out of the air the second goal of the game.

It was Cherry's first goal of the season too. The Bronchos beat Oklahoma Christian 2-0 in the season opener this past Thursday and had two different goal scorers.

Gibson went on to make one more save in the second half. The Bronchos adjustments to the All-American forwards from Southwestern proved to be the difference maker Sunday. SWOSU took just three shots in the second 45 as UCO continued to stall every effort by the Bulldogs.

The Bronchos ended the day with 16 total shots, six on goal. Eason took two on target, and Killion, Haley Post, Haile and Cherry each added one.

Gibson improved to 2-0 in goal for the Bronchos. The true freshman from Houston, Texas has played all 180 minutes in the net for Central in the first two games and has two clean sheets.

UCO is back in action on Wednesday. The Bronchos take on another former Lone Star rival in Midwestern State. That game will begin at 7 p.m. under the newly installed lights at Tom Thompson Field. It will be the first night game in the 21-year history of the field for the Bronchos.
