Central Falls To Pitt State At Buzzer

PITTSBURG, Kan – The University of Central Oklahoma fell to Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon in a tough loss off of a buzzer beating half-court shot, 77-76.

The Bronchos move to 5-4 in regular season play and 0-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

"They were a tough team to stop on the dribble and we continued to allow them to get shots off in the paint." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "We didn't get many good looks in the first half. Despite the loss, I'm still proud of our guys for coming back and battling today."

Adarius Avery led the Bronchos on the day with 25 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. He played all 40 minutes and went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Ashford Golden, also in double figures, had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals.

The first half started slow for the Bronchos. The shots were rushed, not looking for good shots on each possession. Pitt State extended their lead at one point to 13.

UCO had to adjust and moved to a zone defense which put pressure on the Gorillas to force outside shots that wouldn't fall. It was a balanced attack from Golden and Avery to shorten Pitt State's lead to five at halftime, 41-36.

The Bronchos came out in the second half back to their man-to-man defense. Pitt State took advantage and extended their lead to 11 with 16 minutes left.

UCO continued to battle and even gained their first lead of the game when Cooper Clark drilled a 3-pointer near the top of the key. It was a back-and-forth game in the second half, but the Bronchos just couldn't hold the lead long enough. After Golden missed a free-throw with just two seconds left, Pitt State guard, Grant Lozoya came down scoring a shot from half court at the buzzer to win by one.

Josh Holliday and Jaylan Williams added nine points each for the Bronchos. Dashon Bell and Alex Ogunseye had six each and Clark scored four.

The Bronchos continue their season in Shawnee, Okla. against Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. They will head back to Edmond for their final home game of 2018 against Tabor College on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
