UCO Tops OBU in NCAA Tourney Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team took down Oklahoma Baptist 2-0 in the first game of the NCAA Central Regional Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

"I thought we definitely should have scored a few more goals early in the game today, but we made some changes and got what we needed to get the win and that's what is most important," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "The way the team responded when things weren't going their way was big and shows what they're made of."

The dynamic duo of senior Katie Killion and junior Asha Haile led the Bronchos to the Friday afternoon victory.

The first half was slow-going, with OBU taking just four shots against the daunting Central defense. UCO took 15 first-half shots but couldn't find the back of the net.

The first goal of the game was scored in the 64th minute by Haile, from a shot in front of the net about 10 yards out, assisted by Killion.

Only a few minutes later, in the 66th minute, Haile did it again and scored her second goal of the game and the second goal for the Bronchos off of a one-on-one breakaway assisted again by Killion.

In a matter of minutes, the Bronchos turned a tense game in front of a raucous crowd into the 14th shutout of the season for the top-seeded team in the Regional.

Freshman goalie and MIAA Goalkeeper of the Year Kelsi Gibson played all 90 minutes with nine saves and earned her 12th shutout of the season and 15th win of the year.

This was UCO's 21st win on the season, tying the school record for most games won in a season in 2000. It's the third time in program history a team has won 20+ games.

The Bronchos will take on the Minnesota State Mavericks on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Tom Thompson Field. MSU is 19-2-1 on the season, with one of their losses coming against Central Missouri, who the Bronchos twice dispatched including in last week's Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament Championship game, 6-1.

The Mavericks beat Emporia State on Friday in overtime 2-1 scoring the game winning goal with just 12 seconds left in the first OT. MSU is led by junior Dakota Wendell, who scored the game-winner Friday, and has 16 goals on the season. Morgan Cottew also scored Friday and has 11 goals and Julia Zach adds seven.
