UCO Advances In NCAAs

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team triumphed over Minnesota State Sunday afternoon 3-1 on Tom Thompson Field and now the Bronchos advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

"I'm proud of our girls for battling today. It was a cold one and they came out and fought hard. They played good together and did what they needed to get the win." UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They never gave up and that is what I pride them on. They continued to push the entire game."

UCO came out quick and ready to play, scoring the first goal in just the second minute of the game. Asha Haile passed it to Kelsie Eason, who fired a shot from the top of the box and beat the Minnesota State keeper to the right.

The Bronchos came back and scored again in the 22nd minute when senior Katie Killion beat an MSU defender on the right side of the box for an impressive shot past the goalie to put UCO up 2-0.

The Mavericks scored their only goal of the game in the 33rd minute from a shot 25 yards out by Dakota Wendell, assisted by Bri Ciaccio. That made it 2-1 Central and that's how the team went to the halftime locker room.

The second half was much of the same. Both teams had their fair share of opportunities, but both defenses continued to step up and make stops.

But UCO wasn't done. They spoke back in the 84th minute to top off the game by scoring the final goal off a shot from the left side of the box, again by Killion, assisted by Haley Post. The score was Killon's 29th of the season, which leads NCAA Division II.

Freshman goalie Kelsi Gibson played all 90 minutes of the game, allowing one goal and marking up five saves. She now has 16 wins on the season. Sunday's win set an all-time school record for most wins in a season, with 22. UCO is 22-1 in 2018.

The Bronchos advance in the NCAA Tournament and will take on Central Missouri on Friday, Nov. 16 in Grand Valley, Mich. The time is yet to be announced. Grand Valley State is the top-seed in the Midwest Regional and is hosting the third and fourth rounds of the NCAA Tournament. GVSU will play the third-seed in the Midwest Regional, Ferris State. The UCO/UCM winner and the GVSU/FSU winner will play Sunday, Nov. 18.
