Avery Leads Way As UCO Holds On

CANYON, Texas (Nov. 23) -- The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team vanquished Lubbock Christian 68-63 Friday night in the Pak-A-Sac Thanksgiving Classic.

"The guys came out ready to play tonight and came out with a good win," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "We shot it well from outside and played good defense."

The Bronchos shot 43.5 percent (10-of-23) percent from 3-point range and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line in improving to 4-1 on the season.  UCO finishes up the two-day classic Saturday with a 5 p.m. contest against host and No. 8-ranked West Texas A&M.

Adarius Avery led Central with 23 points, going 7-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line while adding 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.  The 6-foot-6 senior also blocked two shots and came up with two steals while playing all but one minute in the contest.

Jaylan Williams dropped in 6-of-10 long-range shots in scoring a season-high 18 points after entering the game having made just 4-of-16 shots from beyond the arc in UCO's first four games

The Bronchos prevailed despite getting just two points from leading scorer Josh Holliday, who entered the game averaging 19.5 points a game on 57-percent shooting from the field.  Holliday missed all nine of his field goal attempts and had just a pair of free throws, but the senior guard came up big in other ways with seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in the win.

Marquis Johnson and Jordan Hemphill scored eight points each, with Johnson adding three assists and Hemphill three steals.

Avery scored the first three points of the game with a layup and free throw and UCO never trailed, jumping out to an early 12-1 lead. The Bronchos led 35-22 at halftime and were up 64-50 after a Williams trey with 3:41 left to play after before holding on down the stretch.

WT is 7-1 on the season after defeating Colorado State-Pueblo Friday afternoon 105-71. Gach Gach scored 16 points to lead the Buffs, while Derrick Geddis added 15 and Joel Murray 12.
