No. 5 Central Oklahoma Edged By NSU

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team lost its first game of the season Friday night 2-1 to rival Northeastern State at Wantland Stadium. The Bronchos, already winners of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season title, fell to 16-1 overall and 9-1 in league play with the setback.

"I'm disappointed that we lost because I know we are a way better team than the way we played today," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We had opportunities to make this game our own early and we didn't look like we wanted. This goes to show you have to step up and play every game for every minute. Hats of to Northeastern, they wanted it more tonight."

Asha Haile scored the game's first goal in the 23rd minute off a rebound. Madison Motil could have gotten an assist after she headed a ball in the box back toward the NSU goalkeeper, who couldn't handle the ball in front of the net. As it slipped away, Haile punched it in and the Bronchos led 1-0.

But that would be it for the Bronchos. UCO outshot Northeastern 21-8 and put eight shots on goal to NSU's six. But it was two of those early in the second half that doomed the Bronchos.

Meagan Chase and Mariah Nicolet both scored 1-on-1 uncontested shots to tie the game in the 48th, and give NSU the lead in the 58th minutes respectively.

UCO Sunday will host Missouri Southern in what will be the final game of the regular season and UCO's senior day. Ally Salls, Camrie Hurst, Ashley Snider, Callie McLaughlin, Katie Killion, Casey Herndon, Morgan Cherry, and Piper Cannon will all be honored before the game.
