No. 5 UCO Trims Lions

EDMOND – The fifth-ranked University of Central Oklahoma soccer team defeated Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon 2-1 at Wantland Stadium in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

As the regular season comes to an end, the Bronchos finished it out with a 17-1 record and a 10-1 mark in league play.

"I'm really proud of this team and all they accomplished," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They worked so hard to get to this point and they deserve to take a moment and relish in the fact they went 17-1 this season. But we're not done either. We know we have a bigger goal and we will start focusing on that pretty quick."

Senior Katie Killion scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute off of an open shot from the right side of the box right over the goalkeeper. Morgan Cherry got the assist, sending a ball through to Killion.

It was a balanced attack on the day from Killion and Cherry.

The second goal for the Bronchos was scored in the 72nd minute off of a cross from Cherry to Killion for a beautiful shot right in front of the box.

Senior goalkeeper Ally Salls played all 90 minutes and only allowed one goal, a 38th minute penalty for Missouri Southern. Cherry took the ball from a Lions forward who fell to the turf on contact and the referee whistled the foul in the box.

UCO outshot MSSU 24-4 on the day. Salls didn't make any saves though as the Broncho defense continued its dominant back-line play in keeping the opponents shots off target.

The game-winning goal for Killion was her 10th such this season, which leads NCAA Division II. She also has a best 24 goals on the season and 56 points.

The Bronchos start their postseason run on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they take on the number eight seed in the MIAA Tournament, Washburn. As the top seed in the tournament, if the Bronchos win Wednesday night, they will host the remainder of the eight-team tourney next Friday and Sunday.

Central Oklahoma will push to play all the games at Tom Thompson Field. An unusually soggy season has moved the Bronchos off the natural grass playing surface there and over to Wantland Stadium. Announcements will be made as soon as possible as to whether UCO plays on its home soccer pitch or at Wantland once those decisions are made closer to gameday.
