No. 10 UCO Gallops Past Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team beat Missouri Western 4-0 Sunday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Spratt Stadium.

The Bronchos, ranked 10th in the nation, improved to 16-0 with the win and are 9-0 in league play. The win Sunday gave Central its first regular season conference championship since joining the league in 2012

"We did a lot of good things today," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "I was proud of the way the team fought early and kept that going. This was a big game for us and the girls really stepped up. As a coach, you love to see that in your team."

Katie Killion scored two more goals Sunday, adding to her blistering pace this season. The senior from Broken Arrow leads the country with 22 goals in 2018.

Killion notched her 21st goal of the season in the 30th minute when fellow senior forward Morgan Cherry dropped an absolute beautiful cross from the right side of the field right in front of the Missouri Western goal, where Killion headed in the score.

Killion's 22nd goal made it 2-0 Central Oklahoma in the second half. She took a pass from Kelsie Eason and fired a shot from about 20 yards out to put the Bronchos ahead in the 55th minute.

Eason then wanted in on the scoring moments later. She received a pass from Asha Haile and took a shot from the top of the box, scoring to the right, to make it 3-0 Bronchos in the 58th minute.

Haile would score later, in the 72nd, to make it 4-0 UCO. That goal was Haile's 12th on the season.

Kelsi Gibson improved to 14-0 on the season in goal. The freshman from Houston, Texas made four saves Sunday in earning her 12th shutout of the year. Gibson continued to lower her goals against average, now down to 0.16, which is best in the nation.

Killion's two goals give her 22 on the season. The senior forward entered the year with 23 career goals. Her 22nd goal moved her into third place for most goals scored in a single season at Central. She is already in third place for most career goals at UCO with 45. Killion also has eight assists to give her 52 points on the season. That leads the nation and is also third place in school history.

Central Oklahoma is now 9-0 in league play and following a Central Missouri loss at Emporia State, plus Western's loss to the Bronchos, UCO will finish the regular season with the best record in the MIAA regardless of what happens on the final weekend of play next weekend. Central hosts Northeastern State on Friday and Missouri Southern on Sunday at Tom Thompson Field before the MIAA Postseason Tournament begins at the end of the month.
