No. 11 UCO Blasts Ichabods

EDMOND – The 11th-ranked University of Central Oklahoma soccer team defeated Washburn 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at Wantland Stadium in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. The Bronchos are now 14-0 in regular season play and 7-0 in league play.

"I was glad to see the team come out and continue to be aggressive," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "I thought early on we weren't doing enough with our chances, but they played very well in the second half to change that and get a big win."

Junior Asha Haile scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute from the middle of the box, assisted by Katie Killion, to put the Bronchos ahead early.

The next goal for UCO was scored in the 25th minute by Kelsie Eason off of a free kick from 25 yards. The ball was sent right to the Washburn goalkeeper, who mishandled the save and let it bounce behind the goal line.

Katie Killion got her first goal of the game in the 42nd minute, beating the opponent 1-on-1 on the right side of the box to make it 3-0 UCO.

That's how the teams went to halftime. Central wasn't going to let it stay that way in the second half.

Haile got her second goal of the game in the 56th minute from a shot from the right side of the box, assisted by Morgan Cherry. UCO got their fifth goal from a Washburn player hitting it into the goal off of a corner kick by Eason. That made it 5-0 UCO.

Killion then scored another goal, her 20th on the season, from beating a girl 1-on-1 on the left side of the box in the 62nd minute. Killion is now tied for fourth with Kim Brown (2002) for most goals in one season. She is now just the third player to score 20 goals in one season in UCO history.

Killion has 43 goals for her career, behind only Brown (91) and Sally Holmes (56). Brown and Holmes held each of the top-five marks in school history before Killion joined them Sunday.

In the 88th minute, Piper Cannon scored for UCO from a shot bounced off of the keeper, off the post, and in, to make it 7-0 Bronchos.

Broncho goalkeepers, Kaitlyn Asher and Ally Salls split time on the game, each playing a half. Asher had two saves, and Salls had one. Salls mishandled a free kick as well late in the game, and off the rebound, Washburn slid in its lone goal of the day.

Central Oklahoma is back in action on Friday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. in Maryville, Mo. against Northwest Missouri. They travel to Missouri Western Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final road trip of the regular season for the Bronchos. UCO hosts Northeastern State and Missouri Southern in two weeks to close out the 2018 regular season.
