No. 11 UCO Tops Emporia State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team won its 300th game in school history Friday night with a 2-1 defeat of Emporia State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wantland Stadium.

"Emporia is doing really well this year and gave us a tough test," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "But a win is a win. I'm proud of the girls for fighting for this one tonight. They had to sharpen up and they did and we got the win."

Cook has coached every one of Central's 300 wins. He started the program in 1998 and now has a 300-112-30 record with the Bronchos.

"That's great," Cook responded. "I'm happy for this team to be the team to hit that mark. And I'm really proud of everyone over the past 20 years that played a part in making this program what it is today."

Central is ranked 11th in the country and is now 13-0 on the season and 6-0 in MIAA contests. The Bronchos got goals from Camille Greer in the 18th minute and another by Katie Killion in the 27th to get an early 2-0 lead.

Greer took a pass from Kelsie Eason on the left side of the box and scored easily her first goal of the season.

Killion, who leads the country with now 18 goals, worked for a ball from Asha Haile around midfield after Emporia State's corner kick darted back the Central way. Killion came down with the ball and began a race easily won by the senior forward from Broken Arrow. She fired a shot from about 15 yards out and put in the goal to give UCO the lead.

Kelsi Gibson played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and earned her 12th win in as many games played. The true freshman from Houston, Texas wasn't tested for most of the match. Emporia took two shots in the first half and neither were on goal. The Hornets took three more shots in the second half and none landed on goal before ESU finally broke free for a chance.

In the 76th minute, Makayla Brady got a pass from Maria Walden on a fastbreak and had a 1-on-1 chance from the left side of the goal. She beat Gibson to the right to make it 2-1.

Gibson didn't make any saves on the game in allowing just her second goal of the season in 971 minutes played. Her 0.19 goals against average is the best in the nation.

Central took 21 shots on the night to Emporia's six. ESU goalkeeper Jillian Patton saved 11 Broncho shots. Killion put five shots on goal and Eason, Morgan Cherry, and Haley Post all added a pair of shots on target.

The Bronchos are back in action on Sunday. UCO will host Washburn at 1 p.m. The game is also scheduled to be played at Wantland Stadium due to excessive rainfall that has dampened UCO's Tom Thompson Field.
