Bronchos Hammer NSU

EDMOND (Jan. 20) – Jordan Hemphill scored six of his career-high 20 points in the final 29 seconds of the first half to give Central Oklahoma a double-digit lead and the Bronchos were never threatened again in an 87-60 bludgeoning of Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO had seen a 15-point lead trimmed to just four in the final minute of the first half before Hemphill's late outburst.  The freshman drilled a 3-pointer from the wing with 29 seconds left and then hustled downcourt after an NSU miss to fire in another long-range offering just ahead of the buzzer.

That gave the Bronchos a 40-30 halftime advantage and Central opened the second half with a 15-2 run to make it 55-32 and end any suspense.

UCO improved to 13-5 on the season and 6-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play in completing a home-and-home sweep of the RiverHawks and ending a two-game league losing streak.

"Jordan gave us a big boost at the end of the half when we were struggling some and he really played well today," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "I thought we did a great job on both ends of the floor in the second half to get separation.  It was a good win for us and one we really needed after losing two tough games last week."

The Bronchos got an amazing 63 points from their bench in the rout, led by Hemphill's best-ever outing.

Hemphill – who had scored 20 combined points in UCO's previous six games -- was 5-of-6 from the field with four treys and 6-of-9 from the line in his 20-point outing while adding six rebounds and two steals.

Marqueese Grayson and Corbin Byford also came off the bench to finish in double figures.  Grayson made three 3-points in scoring 15 points to go along with six assists, with Byford adding 13 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

UCO shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the field, including 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from beyond the arc.  The Bronchos also held a big 42-27 rebounding edge and blocked seven shots in holding NSU to 39.3-percent shooting.

The RiverHawks were up 5-4 early when UCO went on a 25-4 run.  Byford sparked that spurt with eight points, while Grayson and Hemphill had five apiece as the Bronchos moved in front 24-9 at the 8:28 mark.

NSU chipped away at the lead and got within four at 34-30 in the final minute before Hemphill's late sharpshooting gave Central its 10-point halftime cushion.

That grew quickly to start the second half as the Bronchos outscored NSU 15-2 in the first five minutes.

Kole Talbott keyed the spurt with five straight points and Jordan London ended it with a driving layup that gave UCO a commanding 55-32 lead with 14:53 left to play.

The RiverHawks never got closer than 20 again and the Bronchos coasted in for their fifth straight win in the intrastate rivalry.

UCO returns to league action Thursday, hosting Pittsburg State at 7:30 p.m.
