WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road Thursday afternoon, falling to in-state foe Southwestern Oklahoma State.
"Once again, we did enough to go up 1-0," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "But once again, we didn't play at the right level for 90 minutes. We have to get that corrected."
UCO (0-3) wasted no time jumping out to a lead Thursday. In just the fifth minute, Asha Haile scored her first goal of the season to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead in the game.
The Bronchos held that for most of the game. Southwestern put on a blistering pace throughout the match, and finally broke through for the leveling score in the 69th minute. Then, in the 88th minute, SWOSU put home a second goal to take a 2-1 lead. Moments later, the referee blew the final whistle.
UCO took nine shots on the day Thursday. Freshman Kelsie Eason took a team-high four, with two of those on goal. Haile took three, one on goal – her goal in the fifth minute. Camrie Hurst and Michelle Molen also took one shot each.
Southwestern landed nine shots on goal. The Bulldogs took 19 total shots on the day.
Kaitlyn Asher started her third career game Thursday. Asher has played all 270 minutes for the Bronchos in net this season. Thursday, the freshman made seven saves. She has 17 saves already on the young season.
The Bronchos fall to 0-3 on the young season. It's the third time in school history Central Oklahoma has started a season 0-3. In both of the previous slow starts, UCO made the NCAA Tournament. UCO followed an 0-3 start in 2011 with 15 consecutive wins.
The Bronchos have never been 0-4. UCO hosts Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Tom Thompson Soccer Field.
