No. 9 UCO Takes Care of Tigers

EDMOND (Sept. 29) – Streaking Central Oklahoma used a balanced attack to register its eighth straight sweep Friday night at Hamilton Field House as the No. 9-ranked Bronchos eased past Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Fort Hays State.

UCO had some difficulties in each set before claiming a 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 victory to set the stage for a Saturday night showdown against defending league champion and No. 5-rated Nebraska-Kearney.  Match-time is 7 p.m.

The Bronchos improved to 17-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference with their 14th consecutive win and 21st home win in a row.  UNK (15-1, 4-0) won its 12th straight match Friday with a road sweep of Pittsburg State.

"We got contributions from a lot of different players and that's what you like to see," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a good win for us and now we have to get ready for a big match tomorrow.  Kearney has a great team and it will be a big challenge, but we're looking forward to it."

Taylor Bevis, who missed UCO's Tuesday win over Pittsburg State, returned to action and led the way with 13 kills to go with eight digs.  Jordan Spence was a force at the net, hitting .444 with nine kills and just one error in 18 attacks while adding seven total blocks.

The Bronchos also got eight kills from Karyn Chrisman and five apiece from Alexis Washington and McKenzie Fyfe, with Fyfe adding 29 assists.  Dominique Lipari had a match-high 17 digs.

UCO trailed 4-3 early in the opening set before reeling off nine unanswered points, with eight of those coming while Lipari was serving.  Spence had three kills and an assisted block during that spree as the Bronchos went up 12-4 before coasting in.

The second set was also close early before a Spence smash down the middle broke a 5-all tie and sparked a 5-0 run.  Callie Bangasser added back-to-back service aces as UCO pulled away again to take command of the match.

There were 10 ties and six lead changes in a hotly-contested third set that saw the Bronchos take the lead for good at 17-16 on a Washington kill.  The Tigers made four errors the rest of the way as UCO closed out the win.
