Streaking Bronchos Down SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. (Sept. 23) – Jordan Spence sparked an opening-set onslaught that put Central Oklahoma in quick control and the Bronchos rolled to a second straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association road romp here Saturday night.

No. 10-ranked UCO toppled Southwest Baptist 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 for its 12th straight win, including the sixth consecutive sweep.  The Bronchos moved to 15-1 on the season and 2-0 in the league.

Spence dominated at the outset, notching a kill, a solo block and two assisted blocks as UCO bolted to a 5-0 first-set lead.  The Bronchos overcame slim early deficits in the second and third sets to close out the match.

"We got off to a quick start and that was a key to the match," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We didn't play great, but I thought we did a good job of taking care of business.  It was a good road trip for us."

Taylor Bevis led UCO with another outstanding all-around effort.  The junior outside hitter hit .356 with a match-high 19 kills and just three errors in 45 attacks while adding a team-leading 17 digs.

Spence finished with eight kills and five total blocks, with Karyn Chrisman chipping in five kills.  Setter McKenzie Fyfe had 29 assists and 14 digs and Dominique Lipari added 10 digs.

Allie Davis teamed with Spence on the two assisted blocks in the opening-set start that gave the Bronchos their quick 5-0 advantage.  SBU rallied to within 16-15 before UCO regained control on back-to-back kills by Spence and Bevis.

Spence came through again in the opening stages of the second set, knocking down two kills in addition to making a solo block during a 5-0 run that turned a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead and the Bronchos never trailed again.

UCO used another five-point spurt in the third set, with kills by Bevis, Chrisman and Malia Kaaiohelo putting the Bronchos in command early.

Central starts a three-match league homestand Tuesday with a 6 p.m. match against Pittsburg State.
