Bronchos Open Season With Win Over Lindenwood

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma football team won its season opener 35-14 against Lindenwood in front of 5,961 fans at Wantland Stadium Thursday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

Chas Stallard threw four touchdown passes to lead the way. Clay McKenzie added a rushing TD to give the Bronchos a 1-0 start to the 2017 season.

"Chas didn't have very many yards, but that's not who he is," UCO head coach Nick Bobeck said. "He did a good job of finding the right receiver at the right time."

Stallard went 11 of 22 passing for 157 yards and four scores. He also ran the ball 11 times for 78 yards. The fifth-year quarterback connected on touchdown passes of 36, 6, 37, and 13 to three different receivers.

L'liott Curry hauled in the game's first score on a 36-yard catch with five minutes to play in the first quarter. Lindenwood then evened the score with 18 seconds to play in the first, and took a 14-7 lead with 10 minutes to play in the second. But UCO responded.

McKenzie, who finished with 94 yards on 21 carries, ran in a 12-yard touchdown with 4:55 to play in the first half to make it 14-14. UCO then forced a big three-and-out, sparked by a huge tackle on the kickoff by Riley Galyon – who led the team with eight tackles on the night. Then the Bronchos struck again with just 44 seconds left in the half on a six-yard touchdown pass to Josh Crockett to make it 21-14.

UCO scored on a 37-yard J.T. Luper touchdown catch, and a 13-yard score by Crockett in the second half to reach the final tally. Bobeck cited big plays by Galyon on the defensive side of the ball as a big reason why.

"When Riley made that special teams play, that put some energy in the stadium," Bobeck said. "And he did that a bunch on defense."

The Bronchos have nine days until their next game, a Saturday, Sept. 9 affair in Pittsburg, Kan. against Pitt State. The Gorillas are 0-1 after losing 28-23 to Central Missouri Thursday.
