No. 9 Bronchos lose close one at Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. – Marley Anderson missed three 3-pointers on the final possession and Central Oklahoma lost 55-52 to Nebraska-Kearney in MIAA play Thursday night.

The Bronchos (20-3, 11-3) had the ball with 10 seconds to go and needed a three to tie. Anderson hit a game-winning 3-pointer two weeks ago to beat Missouri Southern.

Anderson caught a pass at the top of the key coming off a screen and got a clean look on the first attempt, but missed.

An offensive rebound and quick pass back to Anderson and the senior guard got a second clean look at a game-tying three. Another miss.

Then Anderson got her own long rebound and dribbled to the corner, turned, and fired a third attempt. Miss again.

The Bronchos shot 17-of-49 on the night and suffered its second loss in as many games after only losing once in the first 21. UCO shot 4-of-17 from deep.

"Tonight was not a good night for us offensively," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We couldn't get into a rhythm on offense. I thought we played pretty good defensively. If you give up 55 points, you should win. We need to just get something going on offense."

Blake Blessington led the Bronchos with 15 points and was the only UCO player to score double digits. Blessington was just 3-of-6 from the floor but added eight free throws.

Anderson, Melinda Murillo and Megan Womack each scored six for the Bronchos. Olivia Mason, Jesheon Cooper and Hayley Bryan each scored five.

The Bronchos got off to a cold start Thursday. In the first quarter, UCO managed just one field goal and trailed 17-7 after the opening frame. UCO did much better in the second quarter but Kearney kept the pace and led by 12 at the break.

The third quarter was the best of the night for the Bronchos, clawing and scratching back into the game. After three quarters, Kearney held a slim 42-37 lead.

UCO's defense really turned up the heat in the fourth, but still couldn't get anything going on offense.

The Bronchos made it a one-score game in the final minute, but could never find the offense at the right time.

UCO continues a short, two-game road trip with an afternoon MIAA contest with Fort Hays State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
