No. 9 Bronchos fall again

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped its third game in a row Saturday in a 57-44 loss at Fort Hays State.

The Bronchos are now 20-4 on the season, 11-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. The loss drops the Bronchos to third in the conference with four games left on the schedule. UCO is two games back of Pittsburg State, one back of Central Missouri, and tied with Emporia State, who the Bronchos play in the season-finale on Feb. 25.

Saturday, it was another struggle to find an offensive rhythm for the Bronchos. UCO's defense forced Fort Hays State to shoot 33 percent from the field and only allowed five 3-pointers on the day. Fort Hays State also shot just 6 of 12 from the free throw line.

But the Bronchos shot a staggering 26 percent from the floor. UCO made 4 of 24 3-pointers, and only got to the line six times – the Bronchos made all six of free throws.

"You're making it really hard on yourself when you can't get anything going on offense," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We just couldn't make a shot tonight and that really beat us."

The Bronchos made 5 of 22 from the floor in the first half, but forced Hays to shoot 5 of 18 and the game was tied 10-10. The second quarter, Hays edged out with the Bronchos again only making five field goals and UCO went to the locker room trailing 30-23.

UCO shot just 3 of 10 in the third quarter and faced a 47-35 deficit heading into the final quarter. In the fourth, UCO managed just eight points on 4 of 16 shooting.

Jesheon Cooper led UCO Saturday with 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Melinda Murillo scored eight, Olivia Mason seven, and Hayley Bryan and Megan Womack each scored six. Blake Blessington added four points and Marley Anderson three to round out the scoring for the Bronchos.

UCO hosts Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. Then the Bronchos host Fort Hays State again on Saturday in the final home game of the season for Central.
