Bronchos upset by Nebraska-Kearney

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma's offensive woes continued Thursday night, and the 18th-ranked Bronchos lost 73-59 to Nebraska-Kearney in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup.

The Bronchos (20-5, 11-5) were tied at halftime, and had their best offensive spurt in the third quarter, but couldn't keep pace with Kearney, which shot a blistering 52 percent from 3-point land.

The loss drops UCO to fifth in the MIAA. The Bronchos are tied with Missouri Western for fourth place but do not own the tiebreaker. The top-four teams in the conference will receive a first-round bye in the conference tournament in two weeks.

UCO had four score in double figures Thursday night. Marley Anderson led the way for the Bronchos with 13. Anderson added four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.

Melinda Murillo scored 12 and Blake Blessington and Olivia Mason each scored 10.

The Bronchos though, were bit by a 37 percent shooting night from the floor. UCO shot 3 of 16 in the first quarter and only mustered seven points. UCO was better in the second, shooting 6 of 14, and the Bronchos went to the locker room tied 23-23.

The Bronchos came out in third quarter with their best offense of the night. UCO built an early four-point lead, but that would be its biggest of the night. As the Broncho offense finally clicked, Kearney began to catch fire from deep.

As the fourth quarter rolled around, the Bronchos were down only five, but Kearney stretched its lead to 14 just over halfway through the final quarter as they pulled away for their second win over the Bronchos in seven days.

UCO hosts Fort Hays State on Saturday in the final home game of the season. The Bronchos play at Washburn and at Emporia State next week in the final week of the regular season.
