Scholl Sparks UCO Past Hornets

EDMOND (Nov. 9) – Ericka Scholl sparked a second-set sequence that lifted Central Oklahoma to a key win and the No. 12-ranked Bronchos went on to sweep Emporia State Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

Scholl had three service aces and a diving one-handed dig as UCO closed the second set with a 7-1 run in pulling out a 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 victory over the pesky Hornets.  The Bronchos, who improved to 27-4 overall and 14-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, wrap up the regular season Friday with a 6 p.m. league contest against Washburn.

"We really struggled with our offense the first two sets, but found a way to get the job done," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a good win for us and now we can focus on Washburn.  That will be a big match for us and we need to be ready to play our best."

Central pulled off an improbable fifth-set rally to beat the Ichabods in this year's first meeting and need a win in the regular season finale to assure itself of no worse than a third-place finish in the league standings.  The MIAA Postseason Tournament starts next week, with the Bronchos assured of hosting a first-round match Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.

UCO had 16 attack errors and hit just .161 in the first two sets before getting its offense cranked up in the third with 17 kills and only one miscue in 26 attempts for a blistering .615 attack percentage.

Taylor Bevis had five attack errors in 18 first-set attacks and then none in the final two sets and 20 attacks, finishing with 17 kills and a .316 attack percentage.  Jordan Spence hit .429 with 11 kills and two errors in 21 attempts.

Alexis Washington hit a torrid .571 with nine kills and one misfire in 14 tries while adding two solo and two assisted blocks.  Karyn Chrisman chipped in seven kills, Dominique Lipari had 18 digs and Scholl finished with 15 assists, 11 digs and three aces.

The Bronchos appeared on their way to an easy rout after jumping out to a quick 10-4 lead in the opening set, but ESU rallied to pull even at 16 and it was tied again at 20.  Back-to-back kills by Bevis and McKenzie Fyfe broke the deadlock and UCO was finally able to close out the set.

There were 12 ties and six lead changes in a back-and-forth second set and it was deadlocked 18-all when Miraku called timeout.  Central then took control as Bevis sandwiched Scholl's first ace with rocket shots down the middle to put the Bronchos ahead 21-18.

The hard-serving Scholl followed with consecutive aces and Chrisman nailed a kill down the line to make it 24-18 before the Hornets finally ended the run with a point, but Spence and Fyfe teamed up for a block to end the set.

It was close again early in the third set before UCO used a 7-2 spurt to turn an 11-9 lead into an 18-11 cushion and the Hornets had no answer.  Bevis and Spence had five kills apiece in the final set, while Washington had four.
