Bronchos retain President's Cup

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 62-21 win over Northeastern State to retain the President's Cup for the fourth straight season.

The Bronchos (7-4, 7-4) got on the board in the first quarter after Chas Stallard hit Josh Crockett on a pass that the senior hauled in with a defender draped over his back. Crockett then burst away from that defender and raced for a 79-yard touchdown. It was Stallard's record-breaking 26th touchdown pass of the season. That became a theme.

The teams traded punts on the next two possessions, then on 2nd & 12, NSU quarterback Cade Yaeger threw a pass that Broncho defensive lineman Johnathan Preston batted at the line. The ball popped up and Noah Ingram was there to grab the interception and ran 20 yards to the end zone to make it 14-0 Central with 5:18 to play in the opening quarter.

Northeastern punted for the fourth time in the quarter with two minutes to play. Stallard three plays later hooked up with J.T. Luper on a 38-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0.

Another record.

Luper's TD grab, muscled away from a Riverhawk defensive back, was his 12th of the season. That's the most in one season in school history, breaking Ryan Gallimore's 11 TD season in 2009. Luper finished the day with six catches, he has 101 on the season for a school record. He finished the day with 88 yards, he has 1,544 on the season for a school record.

UCO cranked up the offense after a 21-0 first quarter, leading 52-7 at halftime.

Stallard had a 15-yard touchdown run. 28-0. Austin Dodd hit a 30-yard field goal. 31-0. Crockett caught his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a 17-yarder. 38-0. Bruce White ran in from 2-yards out. 45-0.

Following NSU's first score of the game, Stallard scored his second touchdown of the day from 7-yards out after a double-reverse led to Derek Reeves throwing to Stallard in the flats for the score. It was the second time this season Stallard has caught a touchdown pass. The Riverhawks did outscore the Bronchos 14-3 in the third quarter, but the Central defense wasn't giving up any more.

Colton Wright was the leading tackler on the day at just 4.5 tackles. But the Broncho defense had yet another dominant performance. Stephan Robinson grabbed his fifth interception of the season.

Alex Figueroa and Carson Smith each forced a fumble, and Preston and Justin Stewart each recovered one. UCO also had six sacks on the day. Figueroa, Smith, Stewart, Eli Hooks, and Jordan Stafford each had a sack, and Chris Pogi and Sevin Franklin had another together.

Chandler Garrett added the game's final score in the fourth quarter to make it 62-21 with 11:22 on the clock.

UCO worked to run that clock out the rest of the game before hoisting the President's Cup to cap off a 7-4 season.

Stallard finished the day 16 of 24 for 239 yards and a three touchdowns. UCO also used Garrett in the passing game a bit. The redshirt freshman was 2-for-2 for 23 yards.

White and Garrett both ran for 74 yards and a touchdown on the day. White had a team-high 18 carries, while Garrett had 10. Stallard had 12 carries for 44 yards and one score.

Crockett led the Bronchos in receiving with 137 yards on six receptions and two scores. Dustin Basks added four catches for 23 yards.

Central Oklahoma now awaits its postseason fate, as the Bronchos are bowl eligible. UCO went to its first bowl game in 2014, and won the Texarkana Live United Bowl in 2015.
