Broncho season ends in MIAA Quarterfinals

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team saw its season come crashing to an end in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association quarterfinals Wednesday night in a 2-1 defeat to Missouri Western.

The Bronchos fell into an early hole after Missouri Western's Cassidy Menke stole a pass from UCO goalkeeper Ally Salls and scored an easy shot from the left to make it 1-0 in just the 10th minute of play.

UCO applied pressure much of the first half, taking five shots and putting four on target. Missouri Western saved them all however, and the Bronchos went to the halftime locker room facing a 1-0 deficit.

In the second half, Haile netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 72nd minute. The sophomore, who was named Second Team All-MIAA for the second time in as many years earlier Wednesday, popped in an unassisted shot on the right side of the box from about 10 yards out.

The Bronchos kept pushing for a game-winner, taking three more shots on goal in the second half. Unfortunately for Central Oklahoma, Western's Sydney Cluck chipped in a sitter from five yards out to give the Griffons a 2-1 lead.

UCO senior Mikayla Lowery got a shot off just moments after play resumed, but it was blocked. Kelsie Eason then nearly got a header in to equalize in the 89th minute, but again, Missouri Western came up with the save and ultimately, the win.

UCO finished with 11 shots on the night, eight on goal. Salls made five saves in the game. The junior keeper finished the season with a 6-5 record in goal.

Central finished the 2017 season 7-10-2.
