Upset bid falls short at Northwest

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma lost 17-10 to No. 1 Northwest Missouri State Saturday at Bearcat Stadium in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

The Bronchos fall to 2-4 on the season, just missing out on ending the back-to-back national champion's 35-game win streak. UCO has lost all four games this season by just one possession.

"We certainly had a chance to win this game," UCO head coach Nick Bobeck said. "We played a heck of a game on defense, but we just couldn't connect on some chances when they counted."

Chas Stallard was 20-of-40 passing Saturday, throwing for 229 yards. But he couldn't connect on the big plays that have helped UCO this season. Stallard had at least five incomplete passes to the end zone.

Chandler Garrett threw UCO's lone touchdown on the day, connecting with Daxton Williams on a 2-yard score in the fourth quarter. Garrett also just missed on a big play. His first career pass was an attempt downfield in the second quarter. The pass fell just short of the receiver, who had the defender beat.

Those misses were the story of the game Saturday. Stallard underthrew L'liott Curry on a pass that would've made it 10-0 UCO in the first. Garrett's pass would have made it 10-7 in the second.

Close calls, paired with a hampered running game, left UCO without many options. The Bronchos totaled just 17 yards on 20 carries Saturday.

The UCO defense kept the Bronchos in contention with a team that hasn't lost since 2014.

Colton Lindsey led Central with nine tackles. Riley Galyon and O'Shay Harris each had eight, and Alex Figueroa made seven. The pressure forced Northwest to just 6-of-16 on third downs Saturday. The Bearcats punted seven times Saturday. That Broncho defense gave UCO a fighting chance in the end.

After Garrett found Williams for a touchdown with 1:34 to go, Alex Quevedo lined up for an onside kick. The Broncho freshman laid down a solid try, the recovering Bearcat muffed the reception and the ball popped up in the air. Unfortunately for Central Oklahoma, another Northwest player grabbed it, and Northwest Missouri ran out the clock.

UCO wide receiver J.T. Luper led the Bronchos on offense again. He made nine catches for 91 yards. Jake Standlee had five catches for 49 yards, and the redshirt freshman led UCO with 20 yards rushing on seven carries. Curry made four catches for 66 yards, and Josh Crockett had one for 15 yards.

Central Oklahoma hosts Nebraska-Kearney in Week 7. It's homecoming week for the Bronchos, with next Saturday's game scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff from Wantland Stadium.
