Bronchos edge Lincoln in MIAA road game

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Olivia Mason hit two free throws with one second left in the game and No. 20 Central Oklahoma beat Lincoln 66-64 Thursday night in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

The Bronchos (12-1, 4-1) led for almost 35 minutes of the game, but could never put Lincoln away. The final 10 seconds of Thursday's game was about as tense of a finish as UCO has had this season.

With 1:10 left, Hayley Bryan hit a pair of free throws to put UCO up 64-61. Lincoln's Khadijah Ellison made a layup with 44 seconds left to cut the lead back to one, then tied at 64 with a free throw.

As time ran down, Mason turned the ball over with seven seconds left. Blake Blessington fouled Ellison, who would have a chance to put Lincoln up by two with just three seconds on the clock.

But Ellison missed both free throws, then fouled Mason after the Broncho senior grabbed the rebound. Mason sank both of her free throws to make it 66-64 with one second left. Hunter Yoakum missed what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"It's good to get a win when you play like we did tonight," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We didn't shoot the ball well and we didn't take care of the ball, so to get out of here with a win is a good thing."

The Bronchos shot a meager 28 percent from the floor Thursday, and turned the ball over 17 times. UCO made just 3 of 21 shots in the third quarter.

Mason led the Bronchos with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She hit 7 of 8 free throws to give UCO the edge. Jesheon Cooper recorded yet another double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Thursday was Cooper's sixth-straight double-double and seventh of the season.

Blessington and Hayley Bryan each added 10 points as well. Melinda Murillo, UCO's leading scorer this season, was held to nine points on 2 of 17 shooting.

Marley Anderson and Shatoya Bryson each scored five, and Megan Womack added four to round out the scoring for the Bronchos.

UCO continues its MIAA-road trip Saturday with a 1:30 tipoff against Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.
