Late Rally Falls Short

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 30) – A gallant ninth-inning comeback fell just short and Central Oklahoma dropped a 7-6 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Washburn here Saturday afternoon.

Jon Kamies blasted a three-run home run in a four-run rally that pulled the Bronchos within a run in their final at bat before the comeback ended as WU took the finale of the three-game series.

UCO fell to 26-20 overall and 18-17 in the league, while the second-place Ichabods improved to 31-15 and 26-10.

The Bronchos are eighth in the conference standings, needing one win in next weekend's three-game season-ending series at Nebraska-Kearney to secure a spot in the MIAA Post-season Tournament.

"We battled hard and just came up a little short," head coach John Martin said.  "We left two many runners on base again, but we competed until the last out."

Hunter Schellhardt was hit by pitch and Jake Dyer walked to lead off the ninth as UCO looked to overcome a 7-2 deficit, with both runners advancing on Jacob Borrego's sacrifice bunt.

Landon Eason plated the first run with a double to right-center field and Kamies followed with his 18th homer of the season, this one a three-run shot to left field that pulled the Bronchos within 7-6.  But UCO couldn't complete the comeback, ending the inning with a pop fly and line out.

Kamies led UCO's 11-hit attack with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while Borrego, Eason and T.J. Sparr had two hits apiece.

Washburn led 4-0 after three innings before the Bronchos got back in the game in the fourth on Sparr's two-run single, but the Ichabods scored once in the fifth and twice in the eighth to go up 7-2 before holding on.
