UCO Sweeps Lopers

EDMOND (March 25) – A late first-game rally and early second-game outburst propelled Central Oklahoma to a much-needed doubleheader sweep of Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at Broncho Field.

The Bronchos used a three-run fifth-inning uprising to pull out a 4-3 win in the opener and then built a quick 9-0 lead in the nightcap before holding on for a 9-8 victory.

UCO, which lost three of four games at the Apple Market Softball Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. last weekend, improved to 22-10 on the season and 7-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics play.  The Bronchos are back in action Saturday, hosting Fort Hays State for a noon twinbill.

"We didn't play very well today and were fortunate to win both games," head coach Cody White said.  "We made a lot of physical and mental mistakes that hurt us, but the good news is we found a way to win and that's what counts."

Nicole Brady went the distance in the pitching circle to earn the first-game win, improving to 10-2.  The senior right-hander allowed eight hits in an 111-pitch outing and dominated down the stretch, giving up only one hit in the final three innings.

Tori Collet's line-drive home run to center field was UCO's lone hit in the first four innings, but the Bronchos broke through with a trio of two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth to overcome a 3-1 deficit.

Ashleigh Tramel ignited the rally when she fouled off a pair of two-strike pitches before drawing a full-count walk and Shelby Carel followed with a single to left field.  Tramel scored on Halley Randolph's  pinch-hit single to left-center and Ally Dziadula tied it with an RBI single through the right side.

An error on Dziadula's hit allowed Rachel Harper – who re-entered the game after Randolph's at bat – and Dziadula to advance a base, with Harper scoring what turned out to be the winning run on a balk.

UCO finished with just four hits in the contest.

The Bronchos took control early in the second game, erupting for seven runs in the second and adding two more in the third to go up 9-0.

UCO loaded the bases with no outs in the second as JoBi Heath and Tramel walked and Halley Randolph singled, with Carel's double to right field driving in two runs.  Dziadula walked to load the bases again and Smith made it 4-0 with a two-run single up the middle.

Carli Jones followed with a three-run bomb over the center field fence to complete the big inning and put the Bronchos in command.

Dziadula had an RBI triple and Smith a run-scoring double in the third to up the lead to 9-0 and that turned out to be just enough to hold off the Lopers, who scored four runs in the top of the seventh to pull within 9-8 before the threat was extinguished.

Smith, Jones and Carel had two hits apiece to lead the offense, while Jessi Walker picked up the pitching win.  The junior right-hander threw 167 pitches and had six strikeouts while giving up four unearned runs before Brady came on to get the final out and earn her second save.
