RiverHawks Rally Past UCO

EDMOND (Feb. 6) – Central Oklahoma dominated most of the game and trailed for just 36 seconds against Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Unfortunately for the Bronchos, that was the final 36 seconds of the game.

The RiverHawks used a devastating second-half 3-point shooting barrage to overcome a 21-point third-period deficit in forcing overtime and then scored the final nine points of the extra session to hand UCO a stunning 67-61 setback.

NSU hit a long trey with 15 seconds left in regulation to pull even at 55-all – the first tie since 3-3 in the opening minute – and took its first lead at 62-61 on a layup with 36 seconds left in OT.

The Bronchos missed three shots and had a turnover the rest of the way, with NSU putting the game away at the free throw line.

UCO fell to 15-7 on the season and 9-7 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, while the RiverHawks improved to 7-15 and 4-12.

"That was a very disappointing loss," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We had control of the game and let it get away from us.  NSU had a lot to do with that with the way they shot the ball in the second half, but we just didn't finish the game."

UCO made just 35.9 percent (23-of-64) of its field goals, including only 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from 3-point range, and got zero points from its bench.

Julia Mason led the Bronchos with 16 points, hitting 8-of-11 shots.  Haley Weathers had three 3-pointers in a 15-point, five-steal outing, while McKenzie Solberg had 13 points, four assists and four steals and Jordan Ward 12 points and six assists.

The RiverHawks shot a sizzling 73.7 percent (14-of-19) in the final two quarters in forcing overtime and was 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

Neither team shot well in the first half that ended with UCO on top 27-14 and the Bronchos pushed that to a 19-point bulge at 41-22 midway through the third quarter after back-to-back Weathers 3-pointers.

The lead peaked at 21 (45-24) on Ward's fast-break layup following a Solberg steal, with NSU cutting its deficit to 15 (48-33) by the end of the period.

The RiverHawks opened the final stanza with a 12-3 run to pull within six at 51-45 and it was close the rest of the way.  J. Mason hit a baseline jumper at 0:30 to give the Bronchos 55-52 lead, but NSU hit a 3-pointer at 0:15 to force overtime.

J. Mason scored all six UCO points in the extra period, with her layup at the 1:27 mark giving the Bronchos a 61-58 lead.

But UCO wouldn't score again, missing two free throws, two 3-pointers and a short jumper the rest of the way as NSU took the went on went on to complete a season sweep of the Bronchos.

UCO is back home Thursday to host Northwest Missouri at 5:30 p.m.
