Solberg Sparks UCO Past Bearcats

EDMOND (Feb. 11) – McKenzie Solberg scored eight of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to spark Central Oklahoma to a 78-63 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Northwest Missouri Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos never trailed, led by 17 at halftime and appeared en route to a rout before going cold in the third period.  The Bearcats pulled to within one by the end of the quarter and it was tied twice early in the final stanza when Solberg took over.

The senior guard scored six points during a 7-0 run that put UCO in front to stay at 60-53 and the Bronchos pulled away from there, improving to 16-7 on the season and 10-7 in the league.

"We played pretty well in the first half and then had a lull in the third period, both offensively and defensively," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "But we didn't panic and did a good job running our offense down the stretch to get layups or get fouled."

Six of UCO's eight fourth-quarter buckets were layups and the Bronchos also went 13-of-15 from the free throw line in the final 10 minutes, part of a 29-of-33 effort from the charity stripe.

Solberg tied a single-game school record for free throw accuracy by making all 10 of her foul shots in addition to hitting 7-of-10 field goals in a 24-point outing while adding three assists and two rebounds.

UCO had three other players in double figures as Haley Weathers and Marley Anderson added 11 points each and Jordan Ward 10.  Weathers made three 3-pointers, giving her 100 for her three-year career with the Bronchos.

The Bronchos committed a season-low nine turnovers, which helped negate NWMSU's 35-26 advantage on the boards.

Solberg had a pair of layups as UCO jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead and it was a 22-14 advantage after the opening period.

The Bearcats were within two at 26-24 midway through the second quarter when Solberg drove inside for a layup to kick-start a half-ending 15-0 spurt.

Olivia Mason and Weathers hit 3-pointers during that surge while Ward added a conventional three-point play to give the Bronchos a commanding 41-24 halftime cushion.

NWMSU scored 10 unanswered points to open the third quarter to quickly make a game of it and outscored the Bronchos 23-7 in the period to get within one at 48-47.

It was tied at 50 and 53 in the final period before Solberg made four free throws and a layup during the 7-0 run that put UCO up 60-53.

Weathers pushed the lead to double digits at 70-59 with two foul shots at the 2:45 mark and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

UCO wraps-up a seven-game homestand Saturday, taking on league-leading and No. 8-ranked Missouri Western at 1:30 p.m.
