Washburn Rebounds Past Bronchos

TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 20) – Rebounding woes proved costly for Central Oklahoma here Saturday night as the Bronchos fell to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association 69-62.

The Ichabods finished with a big 41-21 advantage on the boards in the hard-fought contest, picking up five crucial offensive rebounds in the closing minutes to maintain possession in holding off UCO.

It was the third straight loss for the Bronchos, who fell to 16-10 on the season and 10-10 in the league.  WU improved to 15-11 and 11-9.

"We just didn't do a very good job boxing out and it really hurt us," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We fought hard and gave ourselves a chance at the end and just came up a little short."

UCO trailed 63-59 with less than four minutes left when the Ichabods pulled down three offensive rebounds during one possession before being fouled and making one free throw to go up 64-59.

Olivia Mason made two foul shots with 2:28 left to make it 64-61 and then hit one of two free shots following a Washburn turnover at the 1:57 mark to pull the Bronchos within 64-62.

The Ichabods went to the boards again on their next offensive try, gathering in two missed shots to retain possession before getting fouled with 52 seconds left and hitting one free throw to go up 65-62.

UCO then turned the ball over and Washburn went in for a layup to make it 67-62 before adding two last-second foul shots to arrange the final margin.

The Bronchos shot just 36.0 percent (18-of-50) from the field, while WU hit 51.0 percent (26-of-51) of its shots.

Julia Mason and McKenzie Solberg scored 14 points apiece to pace UCO, with Solberg adding four steals and three steals.  O. Mason chipped in 10 points.

UCO missed two layups in the opening minutes in falling behind quickly and was down 10-2 before Marley Anderson scored four points in a 7-0 run that pulled the Bronchos within 12-11.

The Ichabods scored the final five points of the period to take a 17-11 lead and led by as many as eight in the second quarter.  J. Mason and Weathers both hit 3-pointers to make it a one-point game at 30-29 before WU took a 32-30 lead into intermission.

UCO pulled even for the first time at 36-all on a J. Mason trey with 8:10 left in the third period, it was deadlocked again at 49 on an O. Mason 3-pointer and the Bronchos took their first lead at 51-49 when Bailey Taylor made two free throws with 1:16 left in the quarter.

But Washburn scored the final six points of the stanza to grab a 55-51 advantage heading into the final period and UCO never regained the lead.

The Bronchos return to Edmond for a two-game homestand to end the regular season, hosting Nebraska-Kearney Thursday and Fort Hays State Saturday.
