Fast Start Propels Bronchos

EDMOND (Feb. 25) – Hot-shooting Central Oklahoma scored early and often to seize quick control in a 70-53 mauling of Nebraska-Kearney Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos bolted to a 12-2 lead barely four minutes into the game, were up 26-9 after one quarter and had an insurmountable 46-17-halftime cushion en route to the runaway rout.

UCO improved to 17-10 on the season and 11-10 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association to clinch a first-round game in the MIAA Post-season Tournament next Monday.  The Lopers fell to 14-13 and 10-11.

"We came out really ready to play tonight and were aggressive on both ends of the floor," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We were pushing the ball up-court and getting good shots and our defense was great, especially in the first half."

The Bronchos shot a sizzling 73.9 percent in the opening 20 minutes to put the game away, hitting 17-of-23 shots with six 3-pointers while holding UNK to 25.9-percent shooting (7-of-27).

UCO cooled off in the final two quarters, but it didn't matter as the Lopers never threatened.

Julia Mason led four players in double figures with 15 points and four assists, hitting 7-of-10 shots with one trey.  Olivia Mason was 5-of-7 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers in a 13-point, eight-rebound outing.

The Bronchos also got 12 points from McKenzie Solberg and 11 from Bailey Taylor, while Jordan Ward had four assists, three steals and two points in addition to joining with Haley Weathers to hold UNK leading scorer Laramey Becker nine points under her average.

UCO never trailed and the game was tied only once at 2-2.  Solberg broke that deadlock with a layup to kick-start a 10-0 run that made it 12-2 at the 5:47 mark and it was 26-9 by the end of the period.

The lead was 16 (29-13) early in the second quarter when the Bronchos went on an 11-2 spurt that Ward capped with a layup after a steal to make it 40-15 and J. Mason hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key just before the halftime buzzer to make it a huge 46-17 advantage.

A Taylor trey from the wing midway through the third period gave UCO it's biggest lead at 53-20 and the Bronchos coasted in from there, with UNK using a late-game surge to get within 17 points by the end.

UCO is back home Saturday to end the regular season and celebrate Senior Day, hosting No. 9-ranked Fort Hays State at 1:30 p.m.
