No. 8 Missouri Western Tops Bronchos

EDMOND (Feb. 13) – A cold start put Central Oklahoma in an early hole and the Bronchos never recovered in falling to No. 8-ranked Missouri Western 88-78 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO never led after the Griffons hit a 3-pointer 23 seconds into the game and made just 3-of-15 shots in falling behind 21-6 after the first period.

The Bronchos rallied to within six in the second period, but were down 11 at halftime and trailed by double digits most of the second half.

UCO fell to 16-8 on the season and 10-8 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, while the league-leading Griffons improved to 23-2 and 17-2.

"We needed to get off to a good start and did just the opposite," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We were fighting from behind the whole game and that's hard to do against a team that good, but I was proud of the way we kept battling the whole game."

The Bronchos actually shot the ball extremely well after the slow start and ended up hitting 31-of-56 shots (55.4 percent), but it still wasn't enough.

McKenzie Solberg led UCO with 26 points, hitting 11-of-15 shots with one 3-pointer and all three free throw attempts.  Julia Mason added 16 points, while Bailey Taylor had 10 points and five assists off the bench.

The Bronchos tried to rally from the big 21-6 first-quarter deficit by opening the second quarter with six straight points – four by Solberg – and pulled within six at 24-18 at the 4:40 mark on Megan Womack's layup off a Haley Weathers feed.

It was a seven-point deficit at 31-24 with 1:55 left when Baily Taylor made a steal and hit Weathers with a fast-break layup, but MWSU scored the final four points of the period to take a 35-24 lead at intermission.

UCO got it back to eight at 37-29 early in the third on a Weathers layup, but the Griffons surged ahead by as many as 19 and ended the period with a big 16-point (62-46) advantage.

The Bronchos battled back to within eight (86-78) on a J. Mason 3-pointer from the wing with 24 seconds left, but it was too late.

UCO returns to conference action Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Emporia State.
