Bronchos Roll Past TAMIU

EDMOND (Dec. 5) – Melinda Murillo struck early and often from long range in staking Central Oklahoma to a quick lead and the Bronchos remained unbeaten with a 69-41 shellacking of outmanned Texas A&M International Monday night at Hamilton Field House.

Murillo drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key 22 seconds into the contest, had four by the end of the first quarter and outscored the Dustdevils 18-14 by herself in the first half as UCO raced to a commanding 40-14 lead.  The junior standout finished with six treys in scoring a game-high 24 points.

The Bronchos struggled with their shooting in the second half, but had no trouble improving to 7-0 for their best start since the 1997-98 team got out of the gate with the same record.  UCO needs two more wins to match the school-record start of 9-0 accomplished in 1982-84.

"I thought we did a pretty good job in staying with what we wanted to do and took care of business," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We were sloppy at times, especially in the second half, and need to be better than that."

All 12 UCO players saw action in the game and 10 scored at least two points.  Blake Blessington was the only other double-figure scorer with 11 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Jesheon Cooper, Olivia Mason and Marley Anderson had seven rebounds apiece as the Bronchos held a dominating 54-29 advantage on the boards and outscored TAMIU 29-10 in the paint.

The Dustdevils answered Murillo's opening 3-pointer with one of their own to tie it early, but UCO ripped off 15 unanswered points to quickly seize control.

Blessington broke the 3-3 deadlock with a steal and fast-break layup before Murillo nailed back-to-back treys.  Hayley Bryan swished a short jumper, Murillo splashed through another long bomb and Megan Womack worked inside for a layup to make it 18-3 at the 1:50 mark of the opening period.

The lead ballooned to 20 (29-9) midway through the second quarter on Murillo's fifth 3-pointer of the half and peaked at 29 (40-11) on a Blessington trey before the Dustdevils made a late trey to make it 40-14 at intermission.

TAMIU got within 17 at 47-30 four minutes into the third period, but the Bronchos got layups from Bryan and Ireon Smith and two free throws from Murillo in a 6-0 run to regain a 23-point cushion (53-30) and coasted in from there.

UCO returns to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Thursday at Southwest Baptist.
