Bronchos cruise past Northeastern State

EDMOND - Central Oklahoma edged out to an early lead against Northeastern State at Hamilton Field House on Saturday afternoon and never looked back on its way to a 72-53 win in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

Jesheon Cooper had her best game of the young season, leading the Bronchos with 19 points and nine rebounds. UCO (6-0, 2-0) only trailed once in the game, a 5-4 deficit with 7:15 to play in the first quarter. Melinda Murillo scored 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter to help the Bronchos gain an 18-12 advantage at the break.

"It's good for Jesheon to get going like that," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "She played great today."

The second quarter remained close, with UCO taking its six-point lead to seven at the half. The third quarter was the difference in Saturday's game.

UCO outscored NSU 29-9 in the period, 14-0 in the paint. Cooper scored nine in the quarter.

NSU cut the lead down a bit in the fourth, but couldn't get close enough to make it a game despite UCO only scoring nine in the final quarter.

UCO finished with four in double figures. Cooper's 19 and Olivia Mason's 16 led the way, while Murillo had 14 and freshman Shatoya Bryson had 12.

Mason and Cooper both pulled down nine rebounds to share the team lead.

UCO is back in action on Monday night. The Bronchos host Texas A&M International at 5:30 p.m.
