Bronchos fall to Washburn in final seconds

EDMOND - Austin Dodd missed a 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the game and Central Oklahoma lost 31-28 to Washburn in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action at Wantland Stadium.

The Bronchos (2-8) blocked a Washburn field goal with two minutes to play. Chas Stallard then orchestrated an 11 play, 72 yard drive to set up the field goal attempt for the sophomore.

Dodd, in the game because Seth Hiddink had not recovered from an leg injury last week, was 4 of 4 on extra points on the day, but had yet to attempt a field goal. The attempt was his second career attempt, he missed his first last week at Central Missouri after Hiddink was hurt.

The snap was good, the distance was too, but Dodd pushed it to the right. Washburn took over on downs, took a knee, and the Bronchos lost their second straight game.

UCO now has only one game left in the season. Next Saturday, the Bronchos host Northeastern State in a battle for the President's Cup.

Stallard finished the day 25 for 38 passing with 278 yards and three touchdowns. All three scores went to junior wideout Josh Crockett. Crockett hauled in eight passes for 99 yards with a couple of highlight-reel catches for toucdowns.

Crockett scored his first with the Bronchos trailing 14-0 in the second quarter. He caught a pass in the flats, and sprinted for the front corner of the endzone, which he found, for the 8-yard touchdown.

With UCO trailing 24-7 in the third quarter, Stallard threw an over the shoulder pass to Crockett on the edge of the endzone, where, Crockett made the 19-yard touchdown catch.

With 11:23 to play in the game, Crockett scored his final touchdown. That play sparked the comeback attempt for UCO. After 10 plays and 61 yards of moving the ball down field, Stallard found Crockett on a similar play to his first touchdown. This time Crockett was going to have to beat a defender to get in the endzone and he chose to try that by jumping over the tackler, who hit Crockett in the legs, flipping him over. Crockett, while upside down in mid-air, extended the ball around the pylon for the score and it was 31-21 with just over 11 minutes to play.

UCO forced Washburn to punt after a three & out, then Stallard took the Bronchos 45 yards on a scoring drive capped by his 2-yard run. Washburn appeared to be marching down the field, trying to run the clock out, when UCO got another stop and forced a field goal attempt, which Colton Lindsey blocked.

Stallard then connected with Paten Bond, Connor Pulley, Clay McKenzie, and Crockett on the final drive that took UCO down to the Washburn 16 yardline, where Dodd would attempt the game-tying field goal.
