UCO season comes to an end in NCAA second round

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Oklahoma lost 2-1 to Central Missouri on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, ending the Bronchos season.

Central Missouri scored first, then the Bronchos responded with an equalizer before a foul called on the Bronchos awarded Central Missouri a penalty kick late in the first half. Central Missouri's Jada Scott converted the penalty for what would be the game-winning goal.

"We fought with everything we had," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "The girls never quit."

Cook said he was proud of his senior class, who made it to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the past four seasons.

"That's a great group of girls," Cook said. "I'm glad for them for the careers they had. I'm glad they got to go to the tournament again. It just stinks that it had to end like that."

Hannah Pyle put Central Missouri on the board in the eighth minute. UCO junior midfielder Courtney Essary tied the score in the 35th minute.

The difference came moments later. Kelsey Gordon and a Central Missouri forward collided in the penalty area. Gordon went down on the play, but the foul was called on her, and Central Missouri awarded the penalty.

After an injury timeout, when Gordon was taken out of the game, Central Missouri converted the penalty kick to take the lead.

It was 2-1 Central Missouri at halftime. The entire second half was a mix of both teams pressing for another score.

The Bronchos took 12 shots on the day, six of them on target. Caitlin Moore led the Bronchos with two shots on goal. Ashley McDaniel and Katie Killion each took two shots as well.

Ally Salls played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos, and made three saves.

"We did great to comeback from that first goal," Cook said. "I'm just really proud of that. We battled and battled and we fought. We gave it everything we had."
