Mason Leads Bronchos Past SOSU

EDMOND (Nov. 13) – Olivia Mason scored 12 unanswered points during a dominating four-minute stretch of the second quarter to turn the game around and Central Oklahoma went on to run past Southeastern Oklahoma 91-73 Sunday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos trailed 23-16 after one quarter and were down 30-26 midway through the second before ending the half with a 15-2 run to take control of the game.

Shatoya Bryson started that spurt with two free throws and then Mason took over.  The senior standout went inside for two layups, drifted outside to drill a pair of 3-pointers from the top of the key and added two foul shots as UCO went ahead 40-30 en route to taking a 41-32 halftime advantage.

The Bronchos, who scored 102 points in a rout of Northwestern Oklahoma in Friday's season-opener, extended their lead to 14 (66-52) after three quarters and were up by as many as 25 in the final stanza.

"Olivia basically took over in the second quarter and gave us the boost we needed," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "I thought we played pretty well overall and came out with a good win.  We got contributions from a lot of different players."

Mason finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and two steals while hitting 6-of-11 shots with three treys and 5-of-7 free throws.

UCO also got 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks from Jesheon Cooper, while Melinda Murillo added 14 points, three assists and three steals and Blake Blessington 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Bronchos finished with a big 51-39 advantage on the boards and outscored SOSU 42-16 in the paint.

The game went back-and-forth early and UCO was up 11-9 after a Murillo steal and coast-to-coast layup, but the Savage Storm ended the opening period with a 14-7 run to gain its 23-16 lead.

SOSU's lead was 30-26 with 4:52 left in the half before Bryson's two free throws starting the game-deciding run.  Mason tied it at 30-all with a follow shot at 4:18, put the Bronchos ahead to stay with a trey off a Murillo feed 40 seconds later and just kept going.

UCO stretched its nine-point halftime lead to 14 at 57-43 on a Madison Lee jumper with 3:55 left in the third period and it was still a 14-point margin (66-52) following two Murillo charity tosses with 11 seconds left.

The Bronchos then blew the game open in the final quarter, going up 20 (76-56) on a Murillo 3-pointer with 7:30 left to play and coasting in from there.

UCO returns to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at near-by Oklahoma Christian.
