Bronchos Fall to Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 12) – Too many attack errors resulted in a tough loss for No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma here Saturday night as the Bronchos dropped a four-set decision to No. 13-Washburn in the regular season finale.

UCO committed 32 errors in hitting a paltry .076 – its second-worst hitting match of the year – in falling 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20 to the Ichabods to finish third in the final Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings.

The Bronchos, now 29-3 on the season, ended up 15-3 in the league, while WU moved to 26-5 overall and went 16-2 in conference play.  UCO will host Northwest Missouri at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the MIAA Post-season Tournament.

Nebraska-Kearney won the regular season league title.  The top-four teams host first-round matches in the league tourney before the final two rounds move to the site of the highest remaining seed, with the conference champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.

"We struggled with our offense tonight and lost a tough match to a really good team," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It's a disappointing loss, but we just have to put it behind us and get ready for the conference tournament."

Taylor Bevis led UCO with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Alexis Washington added eight kills.  Jordan Spence and Allison Barr combined for 12 kills and seven blocks in the middle for the Bronchos, with Dominique Lipari (16 digs) and Bonnie Vernon (12 digs) spearheading the defense.

The Ichabods broke away from an early 3-3 tie to take the first set and gain control of the match, though UCO rebounded to take the second set in a back-and-forth battle.

The Bronchos led the second set 10-4, but WU scored six unanswered points to put even at 10-all and it was tied again at 11, 12 and 13 before UCO took the lead for good at 14-13 on a Bevis kill.

It was close again in the third set before the Bronchos committed five errors in a 6-0 Washburn run to fall behind for good.

UCO led 15-13 after a Spence kill in the fourth set, but the Ichabods responded with four unanswered points to grab the lead and went on to close out the match.
