Bronchos bust Lindenwood

EDMOND - Central Oklahoma got one goal from four different players on Sunday, and beat Lindenwood 4-1 at Tom Thompson Field in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Asha Haile scored in the first half, Caitlin Moore, Kenzie Sublett and Katie Killion each scored in the second half, and the Bronchos improved to 8-3-1 on the season. UCO is also now tied for first in the MIAA at 4-1. The Bronchos sit at the top of the table alongside Central Missouri, Fort Hays State and Northeastern State.

"We played really well today," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "I told the girls how important it was to stay focused after Friday's win. I think they did a good job with that today."

Cook especially praised the work of his freshman defender, Kelsey Gordon. Gordon was big all weekend for the Bronchos, coming up with clearances left and right, helping Ally Salls as much as possible in the back.

"She has played tremendous," Cook said. "She had a great game on Friday, and she kept it up today. Great weekend for her, she's just a freshman."

Haile put the Bronchos on the board in the first half with a laser of a shot from straightaway. Moore found Haile at the top of the box, and Haile only needed a turn and dribble to find enough space to get the shot off. Haile put the ball just under the crossbar, too far for the Lindenwood keeper to reach, and it was 1-0 UCO in the 22nd minute.

Lindenwood got on the board in the second half with a score from Taylor Wade in the 48th minute. Central Oklahoma kept its composure and waited to pounce on the next opportunity.

That came an hour into the match. Mikayla Lowery had the ball in the corner and was working to beat a defender when she passed up to Moore. Moore didn't hesitate in sending a shot in. The ball floated into the net in the top right corner, again too high for the Lindenwood goalkeeper to make a save, and the Bronchos were back on top.

Sublett added a goal in the 81st minute to make it 3-1. The senior had some space on the right following a UCO corner kick and was quick to take a shot, which she put past the Lindenwood goalkeeper for her first score of the season.

Killion, who led the team with six goals coming into the match, needed to get in on the action as well and wasn't going to wait much longer. The sophomore worked to gain possession just on the Bronchos side of midfield, and charged ahead past the backline of Lindenwood. Killion had a one-on-one opportunity and slid a shot into the bottom right side of the net to make it 4-1 Bronchos in the 83rd minute.

The Bronchos have a four-game road trip ahead of them. UCO plays Missouri Western next Friday, and will stay in Missouri to take on Northwest Missouri State on Sunday. The Bronchos are not home again until Friday, Oct. 28, when they host Northeastern State.
