Bronchos bested by Northwest Missouri

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma faced an early deficit that carried into a halfime hole it couldn't dig out of, and lost 56-10 to No. 1 Northwest Missouri State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wantland Stadium.

Shawn Bane scored on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 6:40 to play in the first quarter, and Jordan Grove scored on a 42-yard strike with 2:55 to go in the opening stanza to make it 14-0. Despite the Bronchos stopping Northwest on its first try, the first quarter ended with UCO down two touchdowns.

Seth Hiddink put the Bronchos on the board with a 37-yard field goal with 13:02 to play in the second. But Northwest kept its foot on the throttle, scoring on a 17-yard touchdown pass on the next series to make it 21-3.

The Bronchos wouldn't rollover though. The next drive produced UCO's only score of the game. Clay McKenzie capped off a 10 play, 80 yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

What might have been a deflating moment in the game followed. Bane scored his second touchdown of the game on the third play of the next drive, and it was a 78-yard bomb that made it 28-3.

Bane scored for the third time with 1:08 to play in the second, making it 35-10, and George Sehl caught a 26-yard pass to make it 42-10 and that's how the teams went into halftime.

Northwest added two touchdowns with its reserves in the third quarter to make it 56-10.

The Bronchos tried a two-quarterback system, with signs at times that the strategy was working. T.J. Eckert finished 10 of 20 passing with 126 yards. Chas Stallard was 4 of 8 for 76 yards. Both had big passes to Josh Crockett, who finished with six catches for 155 yards.

McKenzie and the rest of the Bronchos running game couldn't find many holes in the line on Saturday. McKenzie had nine carries for 32 yards and a score, his seventh of the season. Jake Gandara had eight carries for 18 yards.

The Bronchos hit the road in Week 7. UCO travels north to face Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 15.
