Barr, Washington Spark UCO Past Jennies

EDMOND (Oct. 28) – Alexis Washington provided a big boost off the bench and Allison Barr delivered down the stretch to propel No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma past No. 15 Central Missouri Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos stayed perfect (13-0) at home with their second straight sweep of a top-15 team, claiming a 25-23, 25-18, 25-19 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph in improving to 24-2 on the season and 10-2 in the league.

The Jennies handed UCO its last home loss -- that coming in the finals of last year's MIAA Tournament -- and also saddled the Bronchos with their first defeat this season, but UCM couldn't keep up this time.

"That was a big-time win against a great team that we've had a lot of trouble with over the years," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "I thought our girls came out really ready to play tonight and we had a lot of energy from the outset."

Washington was the spark, hitting .333 with a season-high 10 kills while adding two blocks.  Barr hit .438 with eight kills and five blocks, getting two kills and three blocks during a dominating third-set performance.

Taylor Bevis had a match-high 12 kills, with Fulani Petties adding six kills and Jordan Spence five along with three blocks.  Katy Davis did a masterful job leading the UCO attack in racking up 37 assists, while Dominique Lipari had a match-leading 16 digs and Mikayla Bangasser nine.

The Bronchos never trailed in the opening set and appeared in control after jumping out to an early 9-2 lead behind a pair of Barr kills.  UCM battled back to within 17-16 and was within a point again at 24-23 when Petties took a Davis set and hammered home the set-winner.

Thirteen ties and five lead changes occurred in the second set before UCO finally went ahead for good at 15-14 on a Bevis rocket down the middle.  It was a 17-16 lead when back-to-back kills by Spence and Barr along with a UCM error broke the set open.

The Bronchos took a quick 5-1 lead in the third set, but it was just a 12-10 advantage when Barr took over.  The senior standout sandwiched two solo blocks around a kill during a 5-1 run that made it 17-11, then added another block and kill as UCO closed out the match.

The Bronchos wrap up the regular season home schedule Saturday, taking on Lindenwood at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.  It will be the final regular season appearance for Bangasser, Barr, Davis, Petties and Bonnie Vernon.
