Katie Killion scores sudden death goal, Bronchos beat Northeastern State

EDMOND - Katie Killion scored her seventh goal of the season for Central Oklahoma against Northeastern State on Friday. The score was the only one of the day and the Bronchos beat their rival Riverhawks 1-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

The Bronchos (11-5-1, 7-3) took control in the race for home field advantage in next week's MIAA Tournament. UCO, in third place, can now do no worse than fourth, guaranteeing a first-round home game on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Friday's game was a matchup of the two teams in the MIAA who shoot more than any other. Central Oklahoma came into the match as the team with most shots taken through 17 games, Northeastern State was second. Friday's tally? 14-13 in favor of NSU.

And after 90 minutes of scoreless play, it seemed like maybe the two most high-powered offenses might be running out of gas.

But as soon as the referee blew his whistle to begin the first of two, 10 minute-sudden death extra periods, NSU blew out in front and took a shot on target. Nobody was going to slow down.

Moments later, Central Oklahoma forward Morgan Cherry found a pass with some room to breathe in the center of the field about 40 yards from goal. Cherry moved it forward and made a desperation attempt at a through-pass to Killion.

Killion corralled the ball, made a move, and drilled home the game-winning score in the 92nd minute.

"I'm proud of Katie for that goal," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "I'm really proud of our team for fighting all the way through, for never giving up. They deserve the win."

UCO now turns its attention to Missouri Southern State in Sunday's finale.

"We've got one more chance to get it all together before the postseason tournament," Cook said. "We have to come out and have a good showing on Sunday, because next week, you can't make any mistakes."

Sunday is also Senior Day for the Bronchos. Ashley McDaniel, Darla HydeKenzie Sublett and Emily Precure will be honored before the game. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
