Bronchos fall to Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. - Mikayla Lowery scored her fourth goal of the season against Fort Hays State on Sunday, but the Bronchos couldn't get any more and lost 3-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

The Bronchos (10-5-1) fell to 6-3 in conference play with two games left in the regular season. UCO is in third in the conference, one spot ahead of Northeastern State, who the Bronchos play in Edmond on Friday. UCO hosts Missouri Southern in the final game of the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 30.

The top eight teams in the conference make the postseason tournament, with the top four hosting their respective first-round games. The highest remaining seed in the second round hosts the semifinals and the championship.

Sunday, the Bronchos offense continued its relentless pressure on opposing defenses. The Bronchos took 11 shots on the day, with seven of them on goal. But like Friday's loss to Nebraska-Kearney, the Bronchos just couldn't get the shots to go in.

Kelsey Steffans put Fort Hays State in front Sunday in the 25th minute. The Bronchos didn't waste any time getting back in the game though.

As the first-half clock rolled over 30 minutes, Caitlin Moore lined up a corner kick for the Bronchos. She put it in well enough for Kelsey Gordon to get her head on it. Fort Hays State goalkeeper Abbie Flax managed to save Gordon's shot, but Flax didn't corral the ball and Lowery was there to punch in the rebound to equalize the match.

Fort Hays State added another goal in the 36th minute. The Bronchos went to halftime without getting another look at tying the match, and trailed 2-1.

In the second half, the Bronchos took five more shots, three of them on target, but again couldn't get one in the net. Fort Hays State added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to make it 3-1. Moore hit the post on a shot in the 86th minute, the closest UCO would get to closing the gap, and the last chance the Bronchos would have on the day.

UCO now shifts its focus to the final two games. First up is Northeastern State on Friday at Tom Thompson Soccer Field at 4 p.m.
