No. 8 Emporia State Downs Bronchos

EDMOND (Jan. 7) – Slow-starting Central Oklahoma fell into a big hole early and never recovered in dropping a 74-63 decision to No. 8-ranked Emporia State Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos missed their first six shots of the game in falling behind 10-0 and could never catch up.  UCO got within four points later in the first quarter, but trailed by double digits the entire second half in falling 10-4 on the season and 4-4 in the conference.

The Hornets made nine of their 12 3-pointers in the first half and held a 41-31 rebounding advantage in improving to 12-2 overall and 6-2 in the league with their fourth straight win.

"We didn't do anything right early in the game and it put us in a bad position right off the bat," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "I thought we fought hard to get back in the game, but we just didn't make enough plays."

Olivia Mason led the Bronchos with 13 points off the bench, hitting three 3-pointers.  Older sister Julia Mason added 11 points as the only other player in double figures and younger sister Sadie Mason had six before going out with a probable season-ending knee injury late in the game.

UCO didn't score until O. Mason hit a trey at the 6:10 mark of the opening quarter after falling behind 10-0, with the Hornets scoring five straight after that to go up 15-3.

The Bronchos got 3-pointers from O. Mason and Bailey Taylor in an 8-0 run to pull within 15-11 and it was still just a four-point deficit at 20-16 following Marley Anderson's three-point play with 1:36 left.

ESU was ahead 23-16 after the first period and had a 14-point second-quarter advantage before settling for an 11-point halftime lead at 48-37 after Megan Womack hit a short jumper at the buzzer.

The Hornets then scored the first six points of the third stanza to extend their cushion to 17 (54-37) and UCO never got closer than the final 11-point margin.
