Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UCO Gets Past Ichabods

EDMOND (Jan. 9) – Jordan Ward drained an early 3-pointer to put Central Oklahoma in front to stay and Haley Weathers' late-game trey made sure the Bronchos stayed there in a 61-51 victory over Washburn Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO never trailed after Ward's long-range shot from the wing – her only bucket of the game -- was on target 50 seconds into the contest, with the Bronchos going on to lead by as many as 14.

But the game was still in doubt in the final minutes after the Ichabods crawled back to within two (51-49) when Weathers tossed in the dagger, splashing through a corner trey at the 3:42 mark.  Julia Mason followed a WU miss with a driving layup to make it 56-49 and UCO went on to close out the win.

The Bronchos improved to 11-4 on the season and 5-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association while dropping Washburn to 10-5 and 6-3.

"We got off to a good start and did a nice job defensively, especially in the first half," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, but Haley hit a big shot to give us a little cushion and we came out with a really good win."

Weathers hit 6-of-10 shots with four 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 16 points, while McKenzie Solberg had 15 points.  J. Mason added 14 points and Olivia Mason had eight points and a team-best nine rebounds, while Megan Womack came up with eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Ward's opening 3-pointer sparked a game-opening 10-1 run and UCO's lead reached double digits at 15-4 on two O. Mason free throws at the 2:51 mark of the first period.

The Bronchos went on to lead 15-8 after the opening quarter and went ahead by 14 (27-13) late in the second on a Weathers trey before settling for a 27-15 halftime advantage.

The Ichabods cut their deficit to three in the third quarter before Bailey Taylor's last-second layup gave UCO a 41-35 lead heading into the final stanza.

WU got it down to two at 51-49 before Weathers hit her clutch 3-pointer, with J. Mason's layup and five points by Solberg keeping the Bronchos safely in front the rest of the way.

UCO goes on the road for league games at Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State next week before returning to Edmond Jan. 21 to start a seven-game conference homestand.
