Upset Bid Falls Short

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Jan. 4) – A gallant upset bid fell short for Central Oklahoma here Monday night as the Bronchos dropped a hard-fought 77-69 decision to unbeaten and No. 16-ranked Missouri Western.

UCO led 36-35 at halftime, was down three (56-53) after three quarters and was within four (61-57) in the final 30 seconds before the Griffons finally closed out the win.

The Bronchos fell to 10-3 on the season and 4-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in their seventh straight league road game.  MWSU improved to 14-0 overall and 8-0 in the conference.

"I was really proud of the way we battled tonight," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We gave ourselves a great chance to win the game and just came up a little short."

UCO shot a solid 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field, but hit only 4-of-22 attempts from 3-point range (18.2 percent) and committed 23 turnovers.

McKenzie Solberg led the Bronchos once again, hitting 5-of-10 shots with one 3-pointer and all four free throw tries in a 15-point, six-rebound outing.  Jordan Ward went 5-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from the line in scoring a season-high 12 points, while Julia Mason added nine points, a team-best seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

UCO was down 56-53 after three quarters before Solberg went in for a layup early in the final stanza to make it 56-55.  The Bronchos were within four at 71-67 after two Solberg free throws with 31 seconds remaining, but MWSU made four straight foul shots and a game-ending layup to close out the win.

The game was tied 2-2 early when UCO went on an 11-2 run to take a 13-4 lead, getting five points from Solberg along with buckets from Megan Womack, Haley Weathers and Marley Anderson.

MWSU came back to tie it 17-all after the opening quarter and it went back-and-forth in the second period before two Womack layups and a Weathers 3-pointer down the stretch gave the Bronchos a 36-35 halftime advantage.

The Griffons opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run to go ahead 43-36, though UCO got five straight points from Ward during a 13-4 spurt to regain the lead at 49-47.  MWSU came back to take a 56-53 advantage by the end of the period and never trailed again.

The Bronchos return to Edmond to play their first conference home game Thursday, hosting Emporia State at 5:30 p.m.
