Weathers Leads UCO Past Jennies

EDMOND (Jan. 23) – Haley Weathers hit consecutive 3-pointers to fuel a 16-0 first-half run that put Central Oklahoma in control and the Bronchos went on to clobber Central Missouri 77-48 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

It was UCO's first win in seven tries against the Jennies, with swarming defense and crisp passing leading the way as the Bronchos bounced back in resounding fashion from Thursday's disappointing loss to Southwest Baptist.

The Bronchos improved to 13-6 on the season and 7-6 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play while dropping UCM to 7-10 and 6-6.

"I wasn't very happy with the way we played Thursday, but the girls came out today and got after it from the start," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We did great job getting in the passing lanes and were making the extra pass."

UCO made a season-high 15 steals in forcing 27 turnovers, scoring 29 points off those miscues.  The Bronchos also had a season-high 20 assists on 27 made buckets.

Weathers drained four 3-pointers and scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the first half while adding four steals to lead four players in double figures.

McKenzie Solberg finished with 13 points and three steals, Julia Mason had 11 points, three assists and two steals and Bailey Taylor chipped 11 points.

The Bronchos also got a season-high seven assists from Jordan Ward, while Megan Womack pulled down a team-best seven rebounds and Olivia Mason had six rebounds, five points, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

UCO turned an 11-7 first-period deficit into a 24-17 lead on a Bailey 3-pointer early in the second stanza, but the Jennies went on a 10-2 spurt to climb in front 27-26 at the 6:32 mark.

That's when the Bronchos unleashed their game-changing 16-0 surge, with Weathers' hitting two treys in a 20-second span to lead the way.  Six players scored in the run, which was capped by an O. Mason 3-pointer that gave UCO a 42-27 lead.

UCM hit two free throws to end its scoring drought, but Solberg followed with a layup off a J. Mason assist to give the Bronchos a 44-29 halftime advantage.

The Jennies never got closer than 12 in the final two quarters and UCO led by 20-plus points the entire final period.

The Bronchos continue a lengthy homestand Thursday, hosting Lincoln at 5:30 p.m.
