Bronchos Fall To SBU

EDMOND (Jan. 21) – Early turnovers and game-long shooting woes proved too much for Central Oklahoma to overcome in a 77-62 loss to Southwest Baptist Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos had four turnovers in the first four minutes in falling behind and shot just 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range in dropping their second straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association contest.

UCO fell to 12-6 overall and 6-6 in the league in the opener of a seven-game homestand.  The Bearcats improved to 10-7 and 5-6.

"We seemed a step slow all night and just got outplayed," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "Obviously we didn't shoot it very well, but we also weren't very good defensively and they beat us to all the loose balls."

UCO trailed just 29-27 at halftime, but SBU shot a sizzling 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the field in the second half and led by double digits most of the final two quarters.

McKenzie Solberg was the lone player in double figures for the Bronchos with 16 points.  Julia and Olivia Mason had eight points apiece, with Bailey Taylor adding seven points, three steals and two assists.

UCO led only once, at 5-4 on a J. Mason layup off a Jordan Ward assist two minutes into the game.  The Bearcats scored the next four points to move back in front and stretched their lead to eight (25-17) midway through the second period.

The Bronchos used a 10-2 run to get within 29-27 at the break and then pulled even at 29 and 31 early in the third quarter on layups by J. Mason and Megan Womack.

Five straight missed shots and three turnovers helped fuel an 11-0 SBU spurt that gave the Bearcats a 42-31 advantage and UCO got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Bronchos are back home Saturday to host Central Missouri at 1:30 p.m.
