HAYS, Kan. (Jan. 16) – Missed shots led to a missed opportunity for Central Oklahoma as No. 3-ranked Fort Hays State survived the Bronchos 59-56 here Saturday afternoon.

UCO made just three of its last 26 field goal attempts after taking a 14-point third-period lead and the Tigers ended the extra session with a 9-2 run to overcome a 54-50 deficit in handing the Bronchos the tough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback.

"We had a chance to maybe put the game away, but made too many mistakes and just couldn't get the ball in the bucket," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "It was a tough loss and we just have to put it behind us."

Regulation ended in a 49-all stalemate, with UCO moving in front 54-50 two minutes into OT on Jordan Ward's driving layup and Haley Weathers' 3-pointer from the wing.

FHSU responded by scoring seven unanswered points to go ahead 57-54, but Julia Mason hit two free throws with 25.1 seconds remaining to make it 57-56.  The Tigers made two foul shots at 20.9 to regain their three-point advantage and J. Mason's 3-point try at forcing another OT was off the mark just before the final horn.

The Bronchos ended up shooting just 29.5 percent (18-of-61) from the field with 24 turnovers in falling to 12-5 on the season and 6-5 in the league.  FHSU improved to 16-1 and 10-1.

Weathers made three treys in scoring a team-high 15 points, while McKenzie Solberg added 11 points and a team-best nine rebounds.  Olivia Mason chipped in 10 points, six boards and two blocked shots.

UCO led 34-24 at halftime, went up 39-27 on a Solberg 3-pointer and had a big 41-27 cushion after Megan Womack went inside for layup at the 6:10 mark of the third quarter before going stone cold.

The Bronchos missed their final 10 shots of the period and scored just one point as FHSU pulled to within 42-39 going into the final stanza.  Both teams struggled to score in the first half of the fourth quarter and UCO led 47-42 after two Weathers free throws with 4:17 remaining.

Four missed shots and two turnovers helped lead to a 7-0 FHSU run that gave the Tigers a 49-47 lead before O. Mason swished two pressure-packed free throws with seven seconds left to tie it and force overtime.

The Bronchos started the game on fire, hitting 6-of-7 long-range shots in the opening 10 minutes and taking a 20-15 lead when Marley Anderson nailed a 22-foot 3-pointer at the first-period buzzer.

The lead reached double digits at 31-20 on a Weathers follow shot late in the second quarter and it was a 12-point advantage (34-22) after Weathers drilled a trey before the Tigers scored to make it 34-24 at intermission.

UCO returns to Edmond to host league rival Southwest Baptist Thursday and open a seven-game homestand.
