Overtime Thriller

JOPLIN, Mo. (Dec. 3) – Julia Mason scored seven of her 17 points in overtime and converted the game-winning three-point play with four seconds left to lift unbeaten Central Oklahoma past Missouri Southern 81-79 here Thursday night.

The Bronchos overcame a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit behind Bailey Taylor's late-game sharp-shooting and then Mason took over in the extra period to propel UCO in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams.

The Lions went ahead 79-78 with 17 seconds left in OT, but Mason worked free for a layup at 0:04 and was fouled.  The senior standout drained the free throw to make it 81-79 and UCO forced a turnover on the final play to hold on.

"I'm really proud of the way we battled tonight," said head coach Guy Hardaker, whose team improved to 5-0 on the season.  "We were down 12 with not a lot of time left, but just refused to give up.  Bailey hit some big-time shots for us in the fourth quarter and Jules really came through in overtime."

Taylor finished with a team-high 19 points by hitting 7-of-9 field goals, including 5-of-7 from long range.  Mason was 6-of-10 from the field in her 17-point outing to go with five rebounds.

The Bronchos also got 16 points and four assists from Marley Anderson and 15 points, five assists and two steals from McKenzie Solberg.

UCO was outrebounded 42-27 in the contest, but made up for that by scoring 33 points off turnovers as the Bronchos harassed MSSU into 27 miscues.

The Lions appeared in good shape after taking a 67-55 lead with just 3:55 left in regulation, but Taylor scored eight points and Olivia Mason four in a rapid-fire 14-2 run.  Taylor drilled back-to-back treys to pull UCO even at 69 with 1:23 remaining.

MSSU broke the deadlock with 42 seconds to play and Anderson tied it again at 0:29 with two free throws, with the teams trading turnovers the rest of the way.

It was the Julia Mason Show in overtime and UCO stayed unbeaten.

The Bronchos led 31-28 at halftime, but MSSU started the third quarter with an 11-3 scoring spurt to go ahead 39-34 and UCO battled from behind the rest of the way.

The Bronchos continue league play Saturday, moving on to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on Pittsburg State at 1:30 p.m.
