Gorillas Hand UCO First Loss

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Dec. 5) – Central Oklahoma went through a third period shooting slump in losing a 12-point lead and went on to fall to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State 81-76 here Saturday afternoon.

It was the first loss of the season for the Bronchos, who dropped to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.  The Gorillas stayed unbeaten, improving to 6-0 and 2-0.

UCO led throughout most of the first three quarters and was up 48-36 with 6:31 left in the third before going cold while PSU heated up.  The Gorillas went on a 19-6 run to take a 55-54 lead by the end of the third and the Bronchos never got back in front.

"We played well in stretches, but had a letdown the last five or six minutes of the third period that really hurt us," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We had our chances and just didn't get it done."

UCO shot just 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field, though it was 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range.  The Bronchos also hit all 20 free throw attempts.

Julia Mason led the way with 23 points, hitting 8-of-15 shots with a pair of treys and all five foul shots.  Marley Anderson was 7-of-7 from the line in a 19-point, three-assist outing, while Olivia Mason added 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Anderson had seven early points as UCO jumped in front 11-4 early and the lead reached double digits at 20-10 on an O. Mason layup before the Gorillas scored the last four points of the quarter.

The Bronchos pushed their lead to 11 (27-16) three minutes into the second period on an Anderson layup, but PSU cut that to five (35-30) by halftime.

UCO went up by 11 again at 45-34 in the third quarter on a J. Mason 3-pointer and the lead peaked at 48-36 a minute later when Mason splashed throughout another long-range jumper.

But the Bronchos soon went cold and PSU ended the quarter with a 19-6 scoring spurt, taking the lead for good at 55-54 with one second remaining.

UCO doesn't play again until going to Jefferson City, Mo. next Saturday to face Lincoln.
