UCO Falls To RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Dec. 19) – There would be no second-half comeback for Central Oklahoma this time.
 
The Bronchos overcame three double-digit deficits in the final two quarters during an 8-1 start, but Northeastern State stretched a seven-point halftime lead to 13 by the of end of the third period and went on to hand UCO a 74-61 setback here Saturday afternoon.
 
"We never really got untracked offensively or defensively," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "It wasn't a very good effort on our part and it's a disappointing way to go into the break."
 
The Bronchos fell to 8-2 on the season and 3-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play in their last game until Dec. 30.  NSU snapped a six-game losing streak in improving to 4-6 and 1-4.
 
The RiverHawks, who entered the game shooting a league-worst 27.9 percent from 3-point range, made 11-of-25 long-range shots (44.0 percent) and led the majority of the game.
 
UCO shot just 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field, including 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from long range, and was outrebounded 40-32.
 
Haley Weathers led the Bronchos with 15 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots with three treys.  Sadie Mason added 12 points and Marley Anderson 11, while leading scorers McKenzie Solberg (17.2 average) and Julia Mason (10.9) combined for just 13 points.
 
UCO had three early turnovers in falling behind 6-2 in the opening minutes before rebounding with a 14-4 run.  Anderson converted a three-point play and S. Mason made two free throws to end that spurt and give the Bronchos a 16-10 lead with 57 seconds left.
 
The RiverHawks hit two 3-pointers in the final 33 seconds to pull even by the end of the quarter and made another to start the second in going up 19-16.  S. Mason's trey from the top of the key tied it at 19, but NSU outscored the Bronchos 18-6 over the next seven minutes to surge in front 37-25.
 
Anderson drilled consecutive 3-pointers from the wing to cut the deficit to 37-31 before the RiverHawks ended the second period scoring with a free throw for their 38-31 halftime advantage.
 
NSU opened the third quarter with a bucket to make it 40-31 and the RiverHawks had 48-35 control by the end of the period.
 
The closest UCO got in the final period was nine at 65-56 with 4:30 left after back-to-back layups by J. Mason and Solberg.  The Bronchos then forced a quick turnover, but Solberg's 3-point offering from the wing went in-and-out of the basket and NSU scored the next four points to put the game away.
